The Best MUFA Foods

An Honest Review of MUFA Flat Belly Diet

By C.Y. Lai

You may have heard about the latest diet called Mufa flat belly diet in Good Morning America. At the time of writing, it's probably the second hottest thing after Paris Hilton's presidential campaign. Prevention magazine's Editor in Chief Liz Vaccariel and Nutrition Editor Cynthia Sass have written a book on this subject (selling at $39.95 per copy). Specifically, they said this diet can help you to reduce the most stubborn fat on your body - the belly fat. There are also other claims including: lose up to 15 lbs in 32 days, trim up to 12 inches of fat, look and feel sexy. Now the question is, does MUFA Flat Belly Diet really work, or it's just another weight loss gimmick?

The concept of MUFA Flat Belly Diet is pretty simple: consume 4 400 calories meal per day, that's about 1600 calories intake daily. Each meal should consist of Mufa foods, and other health foods including whole grains, fruits and vegetables. In case you are wondering, MUFA is actually Monounsaturated Fatty Acids. According to some research, MUFA can help you to lose weight especially in the middle. Foods that contain MUFA include olive oil, sunflower oil, flax oil, avocado, nuts and seeds.

Sorry to disappoint you, but MUFA flat belly diet is hardly a new breakthrough in weight loss. In fact, I suspect that it's design to slim down your bank account instead of belly fat. Here's why:
  1. The diet is unhealthy: MUFA Flat Belly Diet plan is too low in calories. It's not feasible in the long run. In addition, low calories intake will force your body to enter starvation mode which make you difficult to lose weight. In addition, if you manage to lose weight, it should be the direct results of low calories intake. Think about it, if you shift from 2000-3000 calories intake per day to less than 1600 per day, how can you not lose weight? In addition, any low calories diet tends to make you hungry. You need extreme will power to beat those hunger and cravings. What's worse, if you resume your normal meals, you may stop losing weight or gain back the weight!

  2. Lacks flexibility: You have to count calories for each meal and also include at least one MUFA food. How do you think you can manage if you lead a busy life? Of course, there's a solution for those of you who have deep pocket. There's an online Flat Belly Diet program that cost around $15 per month to join.

  3. In the cover of the book, they mentioned you don't need to exercise ("not a single crunch required"). However, there's a chapter in the book that devote to exercise and they said it's "optional". In my opinion, it's an outrageous claim. All health experts and doctors would definitely emphasize incorporating regular exercise into your diet plan.

In a nutshell, MUFA Flat Belly Diet is not recommended.

From Belly Fat to Belly Flat: How Your Hormones Are Adding Inches to Your Waist and Subtracting Years from Your Life -- the Medically Proven Way to Reset Your Metabolism and Reshape Your Body (Paperback)

From Publishers Weekly

Even if dieters have cut out the cheese pizza and ice cream, losing that extra fat around the middle can prove frustrating, especially for those over 30. Author and doctor Randolph (From Hormone Hell to Hormone Well), along with women's health expert James, asserts that much of the blame can be placed on estrogen. A three-pronged approach to reverse the trend, resulting in additional weight loss, involves eating foods to balance one's hormone levels (primarily cruciferous vegetables, citrus and fiber); using a natural, topical progesterone treatment (naturally, he suggests Dr. Randolph's Natural Balance Cream); and taking seven key dietary supplements, including a range of vitamins, a "calcium-magnesium combo" and DHEA. The importance of exercise and physician visits are acknowledged but not discussed ("When You Will Need a Doctor" is essentially two paragraphs about getting one's hormone levels checked). The month's worth of meal plans provided are generally tasty, healthy dishes such as Cauliflower Crab Cakes, Pickled Beets and Grilled Salmon with Dill and Lemon; that said, Randolph's bold assertions and self-promotion give the book an infomercial feel that compromises an otherwise medically sound diet.
