5 Weight loss & Diet Myths Exposed

Copyright © 2008 Steven Magill

Everyone wants the impossible when it comes to dieting and weight loss! And most people will believe almost anything, if it sounds like they'll be able to lose weight faster and easier, even if it is a little far-fetched.

However, the truth is that there are numerous weightloss and diet myths flying around. Here are some of the main ones, exposed as incorrect:

1. You Do Not Need To Count Calories.

Without knowing your calorie intake and output, you can't know if your output is exceeding your intake, which is necessary for weight loss to occur. Calorie counting may seem tedious at the time, but it is one of the most exact ways to ensure you slim down to the size you want.

If you go over your calorie intake one day, though, don't panic. Provided over the course of the week, your calorie intake averages out to what it should be, it won't matter if you're over or under your daily allowance. Interestingly enough, if you cut down on just 100 calories a day, in a year, your weightloss will be nearly 5kgs in a year.

2. You Should Eat A Huge Breakfast.

Whilst it is true, to ensure weightloss when on a diet, you should eat something in the morning time, it does not necessarily have to be a three-course meal! You need to eat something that will tide you over approximately three hours, such as oats, until your mid-morning snack (or lunch, depending on what time you wake up). Simply put, breakfast need only be a bowl of cereal and a piece of toast.

3. You Should Not Snack Between Meals Whilst On A Diet.

Although some people do well on a strict three-meals-a-day routine, others who are more active and have a faster metabolism will benefit from having five or six meals a day, providing the portion size is small. In fact, eating more frequently does increase the metabolism, however great care needs to be taken with the size of the portions to make sure that you're not eating too much at each time, otherwise you will defeat the purpose of your diet in the first place.

4. Never Eat After Eight In The Evening.

This is one of the most well-circulated myths. According to experts, there is nothing wrong with having a couple of hundred calories in the evening time, provided you are careful to account for them on your weekly calorie tally. The problem lies when you start eating in the evening, whilst you are doing something else, and lose track of how much you are consuming. That's when your diet goes out the window!

5. You Should Not Eat Treats Whilst On A Diet.

Going cold turkey is difficult for anyone, so don't do it. Allow yourself a treat once in a while, so that you don't feel completely deprived. You are much more likely to stick to your diet and attain the weightloss goal you set for yourself if you allow a little bit of leeway, and treat yourself once in a while.

Most people who are dieting for weight loss reasons firmly believe that their lives have to be completely interrupted whilst they "lose the weight". In actual fact, the opposite is true. By being a little careful with your portion size of the meals you eat at any time of the day, you will able to succeed at losing - and keeping - your extra weight off, and looking fit and fabulous once you've done so!

Best Weight Loss Diet Ever

Copyright © 2008 Steven Magill

So, you have decided that you are going to try to lose some weight. Who isn't trying to lose weight these days? Everyone is looking for the perfect weight loss diet. Everywhere you look there are books about dieting, television shows about dieting, exercise programs promising to "burn the fat", and more websites than you can count...they are all promising to help you lose weight.

A healthy weight loss rate is a few pounds dropping off each week, and to do this, you need to eat a healthy and balanced diet (trade the McDonald's for a home cooked meal is a good way to start) and you need to exercise regularly. To lose one pound, you need to burn thirty five hundred calories. Weight loss is basic math: if you burn more calories than you take in, you will lose weight.

Before jumping head first into the latest weight loss diet fad, are you sure that you even need to lose weight? What is the reason for this decision to diet? Just because you weigh more than you might want to, and just because you might be bigger around than the latest stick thin supermodel, does not necessarily mean that you need to lose weight. Make sure to schedule an appointment with your doctor and maybe a nutritionist as well. These two health professionals will be able to help you figure out an ideal (and healthy!) target weight and put you on a weight loss diet plan to help you get there.

Once you have figured out your target weight, the next step is to decide on a regular exercise regime. You don't need to join a fancy gym or work out for hours a day. You simply need to exercise enough to burn some fat and build some muscle. It is amazing how many calories a simple walk around the block can burn.

In the event that you feel like you might need some help with your weight loss diet, there are a number of diet programs out there that have large success rates. Jenny Craig and Weight Watchers are the best. Not only do these programs give you the support you need to hit your target weight, they will teach you how to look at food and portion control. You will learn how to eat to get healthy instead of eating to get full. The points system used by Weight Watchers has been especially effective.

What is important is that you are healthy. Being thin should be an afterthought. Of course, if it happens in the course of improving your health then you should be extra happy!

Natural Weight Loss Methods Versus Unnatural Weight Loss Methods

Copyright © 2008 Steven Magill

When is it the time to stop using natural weight loss methods and start using unnatural ones? This is a question primarily asked by people suffering from obesity, and one that requires a great deal of thought prior.

Obesity in adults is something that can do damage to more than just your self-esteem. As a result of being considerably overweight, much more strain is placed on your joints, particularly at the knee.

Generally, your breathing becomes shallower, having to work harder to draw in the large amounts of oxygen required for simple tasks such as walking across the road or climbing a flight of stairs.

In addition, being obese puts you at an increased risk of diseases such as arthritis, diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease, to name a few. If you are female, the risk increases yet again with infertility, breast cancer, and endometrium cancer being just a few of the diseases that you might suffer from as a result of being obese.

Obese people tend to have great difficulty sticking to natural weight loss methods as, for the first few weeks ' or even months ' any weight lost tends not to make a visible difference to their appearance.

Concerning appearance, which is the least important health-wise but the most important to the ego, most obese people have great difficulty locating clothes that fit well, without having to go to a tailor. It becomes tiresome to constantly try clothes on that do not fit well or are tight, and soul-destroying.

Some of the different types of diets that obese people have been recommended ' which are those aimed specifically at losing weight very quickly ' include ones used on obese patients awaiting surgery.

Such diets consist of mostly of water and vegetables, so reduce the calorie intake significantly without risking dehydration. Other natural weight loss methods include concentrated green tea drops, food combining, and the blood group diet, all of which rely on speeding up your metabolism.

Ultimately, in order to encourage natural weight loss, you need a faster metabolism. To do this, you need to eat little and often, lots of fruit and vegetables, and drink plenty of water.

Should you no longer believe that natural weight loss methods are worthwhile, then the alternative, of unnatural weightloss methods, can be considered. Some of these include diet pills to suppress hunger, the insertion of a gastric balloon, having your stomach stapled, and liposuction, amongst others.

Whilst these may seem like a way to solve the problem of obesity, they do not guarantee you will enjoy a consistent weight loss, unless your eating habits change permanently.

Unfortunately, most people suffering from obesity do not follow natural weightloss methods because they find them too difficult. It is far easier to try to ignore the problem, or eat something sweet or high in fat, and far more expensive to switch entirely to the healthy option of regular fresh fruit and salad daily.

If you feel your weight is becoming a problem and you no longer have control over how much or what you eat, then it is advisable to see a nutritionist or a doctor. Sometimes, excessive eating can be due to an underlying problem and other times, it can simply be from habit.

Invariably, it is important to ascertain the reason behind the obesity before you embark upon any natural weight loss programs.

Sensible Weight Loss Whilst Breast Feeding

By Di Amarosi

Many women have a hard time losing weight post pregnancy, but there is light at the end of the tunnel.

“I’ve always believed if it took you 9 months to gain it, give yourself 9 months to get rid of it”

Have NO high expectations of this quick weight loss diets and fads, as it could be detrimental to your health and of your child’s.

Enjoy the time you have with no worry or hassles in the first few weeks as this time is best spent bonding with your new baby, and for you to recover mentally and physically after the birth.

Breastfeeding is the most natural and healthy way of nourishing your new baby. A mother’s breast milk provides sufficient nutrients and a certain amount of antibodies from the mother that may help the baby to resist infections.

A mother has to eat double the amount of calories per day to sustain a high quality supply of breast milk. But don’t let that fool you into eating whatever is in sight. By simply making sure that you remain well nourished by eating a healthy diet, gentle exercise and eating small snacks regularly and at least drinking 2 litres of water a day.

These things combined have shown to assist in gradual weight loss whilst providing an adequate supply of quality breast milk for your baby.

Breast milk is the primary source of food for a baby up until the age of 6months that’s when the infants iron stores are starting to run low. This is when solids are slowly introduced.

During this 6 month period and beyond, breastfeeding has many health benefits for the mother. One being the closeness that a mother and baby feel while feeding, the calming effect it has on him/her and the retracting of the mother’s uterus, back to post pregnancy size.

For many mothers breastfeeding along with a healthy diet is the perfect combination for steady weight loss.

Breastfeeding places a great demand on mother's blood sugar supply and if the diet is not adequate in complex carbohydrate foods, sugar cravings and extreme hunger may occur.

By eating 3 healthy small portioned meals a day with snacks in between you will be soon on your way to a slimmer you. Eating every two to three hours helps maintain a good blood sugar supply and controls hunger.

Some simple suggestions for snack foods are:

Full Fat Yoghurt's
Lots of fresh fruit & vegetables

Foods to avoid when the cravings attack are:

Refined foods i.e. fast foods
Low fat foods (not giving you the calories to supply quality milk)
Sweet biscuit, cakes
Soft drinks, coffee & cordials

Don’t expect the weight to just drop off, it takes time we all know that, but by following these basic steps you will be heading in the right direction to a slimmer you . Successful Ways To Weight Loss

By C S Liner
Some people try nearly every kind of new dieting idea that comes along hoping that one of them would finally work but end up finding it hard to stick to the diet and instead of finding the miracle, they end up consistently failing to lose the weight.
Obviously, these people fail to understand what prevents them from losing weight as they tend to overlook their own mistakes.
The human brain displays a remarkable ability of ignoring the things it does not want to face, it’s not hard to understand why some people eat all manner of things and still claim they haven’t touched anything but salad for a whole week.
If you don’t want to become one of these people then don’t worry there are ways around these problems if you just stick to some pointers then you should be fine.
To avoid compulsions and temptations one point is to make your eating a conscious act. The easiest way to do this is to carry around a notebook and a pen and to write down everything you eat and this means everything including that half eaten kit-kat you might have found in the fridge. By the end of the day you will have a list in the book of how many things you actually eat on a regular basis. you will be surprised at the results!
For most people eating and drinking are acts that bypass rational thinking and you should try to bring them out of the twilight zone. So every time you reach out for a drink or some food, stop and ask yourself “Why am I doing this?”.
Thirst and hunger should be the only legitimate reason you should NOT be drinking or eating for reasons such as boredom, loneliness, depression, tiredness or stress.
Put the bottle down if you’re not thirsty. Put the food back on the shelf or on the table if you’re not hungry.
Do you crave sweets because you’re tired? If so, getting more sleep will give you more energy instead of relying on bad sugars to give you that burst of energy.
Do you feel the need to eat because you’re lonely and depressed? Try going to the cinema or visit a friend. Read a book, watch a movie or listen to some music. There are options you just have to keep yourself active and not rely on food.
One of the biggest mistake in dieting is starving yourself. You should never starve yourself, unless you have enough willpower but even then you will break down sooner or later and eat the first thing that you can get your hands on, and usually snacks and junk food is the case.
When you starve yourself you make your body go into power save mode which limits your energy levels and hangs on to your existing fat. Your body doesn’t actually know the difference between dieting and starvation so it will behave as in danger, therefore eating 3 meals a day, plus snacks consisting of fruit and vegetables is the best way if your wanting to lose the weight.
Banishing your favorite foods completely is not a good idea as it will only sap your own willingness to stick to the diet. One main key to dieting is think moderation, not denial. If you like a little bit a chocolate, adding a little treat once a week doesn't hurt and another good idea is to take a break from whatever it is you’re doing and enjoy this special treat. Keep any guilt pains away and don’t feel like you’re cheating on the diet as in fact you’re just dieting, not preparing for admission to a convent or monastery.
So have a bit of forbidden food every five days or so and enjoy the moment.
Of course, exercising comes with every part of dieting, exercise is a must. Start small if you’re not used to exercising there’s no need to rush into hour-long training sessions.
Five minutes per day will do for starters. Get a treadmill and a pair of dumbbells and make your own schedule. Two minutes and a half of running and two minutes and half of curls. Every week increase the time spent exercising by another five minutes and add new exercises. Your goal should be to spend at least 30 minutes every day working out your body. Sixty minutes is even better, but it will come in time. It’s OK to start small.
By following the above your weight loss will be successful.
