Go The Flat Belly Diet!

Author: Jo Campbell

We all know we have to follow a healthy diet to lose weight...but oh boy, do we hate diet food! Enter the world of the Flat Belly Diet where you can lose up to 15 pounds in 32 days, while eating chocolate, and wait for it....without exercise. Sounds too good to be true doesn't it? We decided to investigate.

The Flat Belly Diet, a top selling diet book, was written by Liz Vaccariello, editor in chief of Prevention, along with Cynthia Sass, MPH, RD, nutrition director at Prevention. We all want flat stomachs don't we? The main focus area and title of this book is a marketer's dream, which no doubt helped to push the sales.

When you look carefully at The Flat Belly Diet, it really boils down to nothing more than a calorie controlled Mediterranean style diet made easy. The Mediterranean diet has been proven in a number of scientific studies to promote good health and weight loss. The Flat Belly Diet may still become one the most well known diet of its sort yet, as it provides a relatively easy how-to for the Mediterranean Diet.

Another appealing feature of the diet is the energy it appears to bring with it. Calling a monounsaturated fat a MUFA almost makes it sound like a fashion accessory, rather than a food type in a diet. Add in the fact that dark chocolate counts as a MUFA and you have a thoroughly fashionable and exciting diet!

As far as scientific backing for MUFAs goes, a number of scientific studies to date demonstrated the benefits of including MUFAs into your diet, not only to protect or improve your waistline, but also to improve your general health and mental ability.

On The Flat Belly Diet program you are limited to four 400 calorie meals per day. Again, as far as diets go, this is a pretty good limit to set. Most people will lose weight safely and effectively on 1600 calories per day. Every meal must be accompanied by a MUFA. The MUFA will also help keep you satisfied for longer, and it will most definitely make the food taste less like diet food and more like real food.

You will start off by following an initial 4 day jump-start program designed to reduce bloating and prepare you mentally before you start the Flat Belly Diet. During the jump-start program you will be limited to between 1,200- to 1400-calories, and you will have to drink 2 litres of "sassy water", a blend of water, herbs, spices, citrus and cucumber, every day. After the jump start phase you will feel less lethargic, less bloated and less constipated.

In keeping with the Mediterranean style diet the second phase (duration 28 days) focus on (aside from MUFAs) plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, beans, seeds and lean protein. As mentioned earlier each meal is accompanied by a MUFA belonging to one of 5 groups: nuts, oils and seeds, olives, avocados and dark chocolate. Red meat is allowed on rare occasions, maybe once a month.

Aside from the book, the Flat Belly Diet also offers a dieters web-site that provides tools assistance and support. The online program allows for the customization of members' calorie needs based on age, sex, height, weight and activity level. While the program does not require participants to exercise, it does encourage it in the interest of better weight loss and health results.

In our experience, if you lose 15 pounds in 32 days, a large percentage of this will be water weight. You may find that despite claims of huge losses, you still only lose at a rate of approximately 1-2 pounds per week, the rate generally recommended by health experts anyway. To reiterate the view expressed earlier; this is a calorie-controlled, Mediterranean-style diet plan meaning you will lose weight (all over and not necessarily just around the midsection) safely and effectively.

Still, if this diet allows you to have your chocolate and lose weight - why not just go for it?

No matter which diet or weight management plan you follow, measuring and monitoring your progress is crucial to your success. At OptimalBodyWeight.com you'll find a free tool to help you do just that. It is jam-packed with lots of cool features and all the functionality you will ever need to help you on your diet journey.

The MUFA Diet

By Mary M Jackson

A common complaint among dieters is that you just can't seem to lose weight around your middle despite all your diet and exercise efforts. An expanded waistline is not only a matter of vanity but also a health concern. Excess belly fat can increase your risk for diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

There is a way to eliminate both the belly fat and associated health risks through science. Researchers have discovered that eating a very specific kind of fat is actually one of the best ways to eliminate that belly fat.

The idea of fat to help you lose weight is not a new idea. In 2001, Harvard researchers found that the use of moderate amounts of fat in diets actually helped reduce fat more effectively than low-fat diets. A more recent study conducted by scientists at Reina Sofia University Hospital Cordoba, Spain found that a single type of dietary fat called monounsaturated fats targeted fat loss in a specific area of the body.

Monounsaturated fats (MUFAs for short) come from healthy oils in plants such as olives, nuts, and avocados. MUFAs have been associated with overall weight loss and small amounts of weight and body fat loss without changing calorie intake. More importantly, this dietary fat has been found to help reduce markers for inflammation, prevent and control type 2 diabetes, and reduce the risk of heart disease by lowering "bad" LDL cholesterol levels and boosting the "good" HDL.

The goal is to incorporate MUFAs in a diet plan. This will actually make it easier to stick with the plan because these good fats are both satisfying and filling.

Tips for Losing Belly Fat

Ways to Eat

· Include a MUFA with each meal.
· Be conscientious with calorie goal. Significant weight loss requires control of the amount of calories consumed.
· Do not skip meals
· Eat often. Eat a meal every 4 - 5 hours to control your hunger, stabilize your blood sugar, and to increase your metabolism.

Ways to Think

· Manage stress
· Seek support. Ask for support from a family member or friend or sign up with an online support group.
· Keep a journal or diary about your feelings when you eat and why you eat to identify triggers that may lead to unhealthy eating.

Bon Appetite!

The Flat Belly Diet - Does it Work and What in the World is a MUFA?

By Candee Schneider

I'm sure you've seen it...the bright yellow book jacket that proclaims, "The Flat Belly Diet is about Food & Attitude. Period. (Not a Single Crunch Required)" The cover indeed is an attention grabber, but does it work? Is it possible that certain foods can target belly fat?

The authors think it's totally possible to get rid of belly fat..."Belly fat is not your destiny. I am delighted to tell you that you can, and you will, get rid of it."

The Flat Belly Diet was written by Prevention Magazine's vice president and editor-in-chief, Liz Vaccariello and Prevention's nutrition director, Cynthia Sass. Offered as proof, and strategically placed throughout the book, the authors have shined the spotlight on eight weight loss participants that have done a great job shedding belly fat. Their stories are interesting to read and extremely inspirational.

The diet is one of calorie restriction and there are only three simple rules to follow to reach success.

#1 Eat 1600 calories a day...4 meals (400 calories each)

#2 Never go longer than 4 hours without eating

#3 Consume a MUFA with every meal.

What in the world is a MUFA?

MUFA (pronounced "moo fa") stands for monounsaturated fatty acids, or otherwise known as "healthy fat". MUFA's can be found in 5 food categories: healthy oils, olives, avocados, nuts and seeds, and dark chocolate-my favorite!

The book includes a 4-day anti-bloat jumpstart, a four week eating plan (complete with recipes), an optional exercise plan, and loads of nutritional information.

If you want to read all the details about the magic of MUFA's, check out my full Flat Belly Diet Review-you'll be glad you did! This is a fantastic book that will not only help you win your battle with belly fat, but also educate you about many aspects of nutrition, the importance on keeping a food diary, exercise, and stress management.

Rachael Ray Diet - Flat Belly Diet Review

By Rachel Archer

Have you seen the Rachael Ray Diet on her daytime TV show? It's also better known as the flat belly diet and today I plan to review this diet and explain the pros and cons of the diet and whether you can expect to lose 25 pounds in 3 weeks as it suggests. I'll also another weight loss option that has already proven itself if you choose not to try the flat belly diet.

So how does the Flat Belly Diet Work?

The diet is based around a type of beneficial fat known as monounsaturated fat or (MUFA). The idea is that you eat a variety of foods that are high in this fat and as a result you will feel full from this and not eat other foods as a result. As well the ability of your body to burn off this fat more easily than other forms of calories is the major benefit for weight loss you can expect.

So what are the downsides to this diet?

The focus on MUFA as a way to fill you up is misleading as it has been shown that protein is the ideal food for this purpose. If that wasn't enough though to hold up an argument the major problem with this diet is the fact that it will eventually end and through the duration of this very redundant diet you will have slowed your metabolic processes as a result. This is a major problem with most diets and is the reason why people experience a rebound effect after a diet and put weight back on. Most diets have you either avoiding calories as the flat belly diet does, or has you eating a very structured schedule of the same types of foods which is yet another problem with the flat belly diet.

The ideal diet focuses on your metabolism, not on avoiding calories

Lets face it, when you come off of a diet are you going to eat the same as you did on the diet or are you going back to your old habits? Odds are you'll be back to your old habits and the weight will slowly creep back on. Now what if you were to try something different such as calorie shifting. The idea behind calorie shifting is that you are focusing on boosting your metabolism through eating, not avoid calories. This is a much more realistic long term weight loss diet as you are focusing on changing the factor that allowed you to put on the weight to begin with. Best of all with calorie shifting there is no rebound effect, in fact part of the focus of the diet is burning fat continually from its effects for weeks after you decide to stop!.

Truth About Mufa Diet - Is This Mufa Meal Plan and Flat Belly Diet a Scam?

By Faviano Torres

Have you heard of a diet that actually allows you to eat your favorite chocolate chips and dark chocolates topped with macadamia nuts? If you think we are just joking, read about the Truth about Mufa Diet and you will know that we are just informing you of the truth and nothing but the truth. If you think that once you go on a diet, you will never ever taste again your favorite chocolates or peanut butter on a toast, you are definitely mistaken. The Truth about Mufa Diet actually reveals a lot of shocking truths but then, they are the truths certified by various respectable people.

Though it may sound non-sense to you at first, Mufa scientifically stands for monounsaturated fatty acids that we get from foods from plants. Unlike other diets ever made, Mufa Diet is one of the few diets ever featured in the famous Good Morning America show because of its positive effect. On the show, they discussed the truth about mufa diet and how it is divided into five classifications which are chocolates like chocolate chips and dark chocolates; avocadoes; oil such as canola oil, olive oil and sunflower oil; nuts and seeds like peanuts and macadamia nuts; and green olives.

Truth about Mufa Diet is basically divided into 2 central points which are:

1. Mufa diet works and is therefore not a scam because it helps fight bad cholesterol and reduced them to become good cholesterols that our bodies need. With these foods suggested by the Truths about Mufa Diet, it makes us feel full and less hungry and therefore reduce our risks to certain illnesses like high blood pressure and Parkinson's disease.

2. Truths about Mufa Diet became more popular when the best-seller diet book called Prevention Flat Belly was published and promised to aid in better abdominal muscle and weight loss in an amazingly 32 days only. This is made possible because of the Mufa Diet wherein a person would only eat foods from the Mufa Diet and results will be seen shortly.

5 Foods to Help You Get a Flat Belly

By Kirsten Whittaker

Want to transform your body and get a flat belly? There are foods, five of them in fact, that are chock full of monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs, pronounced MOO-fahs) that have long been credited with protecting you from chronic disease.

While these foods have been prized for centuries for their healthy properties, new research shows that these types of foods, can help you lose fat especially around your mid section if part of a sensible diet.

Trimming your middle not only improves your look, and the fit of your clothing; it can also have significant health benefits - reducing risks of heart disease for one. And while we've all seen the subcutaneous fat (outer fat) that makes it hard to get into your jeans, it's the unseen visceral fat deep inside your body around internal organs, that is so dangerous.

Even small amounts of this type of fat can increase your heart disease risk, as well as upping your cholesterol and risk of high blood pressure.

Even if you aren't following a diet, you can substitute one of these good-for-you-foods to what you're eating today to give yourself some health benefits.

Substitute any of these five foods at every meal will help you manage dangerous belly fat... plus cut unnecessary calories so that you are likely to lose both inches and pounds.

There are five categories of monounsaturated fatty acids, or MUFAs:

1) OILS: One tablespoon of canola oil, flaxseed oil, olive oil, peanut oil, pesto sauce, safflower oil, sesame oil, soybean oil, sunflower oil or walnut oil can be used in cooking, as a dressing or addition to a dish, in a marinade or as a salad dressing.

2) NUTS AND SEEDS: Two tablespoons of almonds, almond butter, Brazil nuts, cashew butter, chunky natural peanut butter, dry-roasted cashews, dry-roasted peanuts, dry-roasted sunflower seeds, hazelnuts, macadamia nuts, pecans, pine nuts, pistachios, roasted pumpkin seeds, smooth natural peanut butter, sunflower seeds, sunflower seed butter, tahini (sesame seed paste) or walnuts are delicious as snacks, or as additions to a salad, as a topping for meats or to add body to soups and sauces.

3) AVOCADO: One quarter cup Florida or Hass avocadoes can be sliced and served with a salad or entrée, or made into a dip that is delicious with chips.

4) OLIVES: Ten large black or green olives or two tablespoons of tapenade can be served as a snack, sprinkled on pizza, salad or pasta, spread on crackers or sandwiches - even used as stuffing for chicken or fish fillets.

5) CHOCOLATE: One quarter cup of dark chocolate chips, shavings or chunks can be a part of any sweet treat you love. However you must aim for a high percentage of cocoa for the most benefits - try 85%.

To get the best benefit from these foods, just replace one or more of the foods with a less healthy option that is already part of your diet, and it could help you move closer to your dream and get a flat belly over time.

Next just head on over to the Daily Health Bulletin for more health tips on weight loss and how to get a flat belly. Plus get 5 free revealing health reports.

The Best MUFA Foods

An Honest Review of MUFA Flat Belly Diet

By C.Y. Lai

You may have heard about the latest diet called Mufa flat belly diet in Good Morning America. At the time of writing, it's probably the second hottest thing after Paris Hilton's presidential campaign. Prevention magazine's Editor in Chief Liz Vaccariel and Nutrition Editor Cynthia Sass have written a book on this subject (selling at $39.95 per copy). Specifically, they said this diet can help you to reduce the most stubborn fat on your body - the belly fat. There are also other claims including: lose up to 15 lbs in 32 days, trim up to 12 inches of fat, look and feel sexy. Now the question is, does MUFA Flat Belly Diet really work, or it's just another weight loss gimmick?

The concept of MUFA Flat Belly Diet is pretty simple: consume 4 400 calories meal per day, that's about 1600 calories intake daily. Each meal should consist of Mufa foods, and other health foods including whole grains, fruits and vegetables. In case you are wondering, MUFA is actually Monounsaturated Fatty Acids. According to some research, MUFA can help you to lose weight especially in the middle. Foods that contain MUFA include olive oil, sunflower oil, flax oil, avocado, nuts and seeds.

Sorry to disappoint you, but MUFA flat belly diet is hardly a new breakthrough in weight loss. In fact, I suspect that it's design to slim down your bank account instead of belly fat. Here's why:
  1. The diet is unhealthy: MUFA Flat Belly Diet plan is too low in calories. It's not feasible in the long run. In addition, low calories intake will force your body to enter starvation mode which make you difficult to lose weight. In addition, if you manage to lose weight, it should be the direct results of low calories intake. Think about it, if you shift from 2000-3000 calories intake per day to less than 1600 per day, how can you not lose weight? In addition, any low calories diet tends to make you hungry. You need extreme will power to beat those hunger and cravings. What's worse, if you resume your normal meals, you may stop losing weight or gain back the weight!

  2. Lacks flexibility: You have to count calories for each meal and also include at least one MUFA food. How do you think you can manage if you lead a busy life? Of course, there's a solution for those of you who have deep pocket. There's an online Flat Belly Diet program that cost around $15 per month to join.

  3. In the cover of the book, they mentioned you don't need to exercise ("not a single crunch required"). However, there's a chapter in the book that devote to exercise and they said it's "optional". In my opinion, it's an outrageous claim. All health experts and doctors would definitely emphasize incorporating regular exercise into your diet plan.

In a nutshell, MUFA Flat Belly Diet is not recommended.

From Belly Fat to Belly Flat: How Your Hormones Are Adding Inches to Your Waist and Subtracting Years from Your Life -- the Medically Proven Way to Reset Your Metabolism and Reshape Your Body (Paperback)

From Publishers Weekly

Even if dieters have cut out the cheese pizza and ice cream, losing that extra fat around the middle can prove frustrating, especially for those over 30. Author and doctor Randolph (From Hormone Hell to Hormone Well), along with women's health expert James, asserts that much of the blame can be placed on estrogen. A three-pronged approach to reverse the trend, resulting in additional weight loss, involves eating foods to balance one's hormone levels (primarily cruciferous vegetables, citrus and fiber); using a natural, topical progesterone treatment (naturally, he suggests Dr. Randolph's Natural Balance Cream); and taking seven key dietary supplements, including a range of vitamins, a "calcium-magnesium combo" and DHEA. The importance of exercise and physician visits are acknowledged but not discussed ("When You Will Need a Doctor" is essentially two paragraphs about getting one's hormone levels checked). The month's worth of meal plans provided are generally tasty, healthy dishes such as Cauliflower Crab Cakes, Pickled Beets and Grilled Salmon with Dill and Lemon; that said, Randolph's bold assertions and self-promotion give the book an infomercial feel that compromises an otherwise medically sound diet.
