Overweight And Pregnancy

In cultures where overweight is a problem, the word has pretty well gotten out about the benefits of weight loss. In the United States for example, statistics indicate that a large majority of the population is overweight. How large of a majority? How about two-thirds. Put another way, only one-third of people in the US are not overweight. This really is a stunning reality, and it has led to a wave of public information about the dangers of being overweight.

Most people in the US then are aware that being overweight can lead to a host of health problems. Some of the health problems linked to overweight include increased risk of heart attack, stroke, diabetes, and even certain kinds of cancer. There is an additional problem linked to overweight that typically doesn't get much consideration however: the link between women being overweight and a difficulty with getting pregnant.

Having trouble getting pregnant may not seem as significant as having a heart attack or stroke, but it is a real consideration for some people. Though the data is not necessarily clear-cut, there seem to be a number of reasons why overweight women can have difficulty conceiving. One reason may have to do with a particular hormonal imbalance. Leptin is a hormone that's typically deficient in people who are overweight. Leptin is thought to play a role in appetite regulation and energy levels. Leptin may also be linked to fertility levels in women: the lower the levels of Leptin in a woman's body, the more difficult it may be for a woman to conceive.

A second link between overweight and a difficulty getting pregnant is thought to be the ovulation cycle. Women who are overweight and obese can have ovulation cycles that are abnormal and even non-existent. The problem here of course is that ovulation is when a woman's fertility capacity is replenished and renewed. Without the capacity for fertility to begin with, pregnancy is not just difficult but impossible. A final possibility is that a woman who's considerably overweight simply may not possess the good health needed for the conception process to take place. Contrary to what may be popular belief, conception isn't an automatic process: conception occurs more easily in women who are younger and in good overall health.

It's important to bear in mind that weight gain during a pregnancy is an absolutely normal and appropriate process. What may be problematic is excess body weight before pregnancy takes place. Not only may a normal body weight increase the odds of conception occurring, it will also almost certainly improve the likelihood for a healthy and normal pregnancy term.

Quick Weight Loss

Quick Weight Loss Diets How Do You Know If They are Working?

I come across individuals all the time that tell me they have followed a Quick Weight Loss diet, but don't know if it worked or not.

What do you mean you don't know if it worked or not?

Did you lose weight? Did your body fat percentage decrease? You have to know if it worked or not.

I then ask them if they took any measurements and body fat calculations at the beginning of the Quick Weight Loss diet.

Usually the answer is no.

So I guess they are really telling the truth about not knowing if they lost any weight or not. Generally they say they got on the scale in the beginning and then weighed themselves at the end.

The scale can give you some answers, but it won't tell you the whole story on whether or not your Quick Weight Loss diet is successful. It can also give you plenty of false numbers along the way that will discourage your efforts.

To be successful at fast weight loss you need to be obviously eating properly, but also strength training. Strength training produces lean body mass which is weight on the scale, but looks great on your body and is key to keeping the fat off once you have lost it.

If I only used the scale as my measuring tool and I lost 10 pounds of fat and gained 5 pounds of lean muscle the scale would tell me that I only lost 5 pounds.

I would think that I failed.

If I took before measurements, pictures and body fat calculations I would know that I lost 8% body fat, 4 inches off my waist and gained 5 pounds of lean body mass.

I now know that my Quick Weight Loss diet was successful. The scale didn't tell me those numbers.

Before you start any exercise or Quick Weight Loss diet program make sure that you not only take before pictures, but you also find out what your body fat percentage is and your circumference measurements.

This way you have all the evaluative tools to tell you if a program is successful or not. It will also tell you if you need to modify that program so that you see better and quicker results.

I advise those looking to follow a Quick Weight Loss diet program to start with all these baseline measurements and re-take them every 2-3 weeks to re-evaluate your progress. This will ensure that you know quickly if you need to modify anything with your exercise or diet program so that you can garner more successful weight loss.

Don't just assume a Quick Weight Loss diet program is going to work. You have to measure the results and make modifications to suit you individually. This is the way to guarantee successful weight loss.

Weight Loss Success - 6 Quick Tips

By Kathryn O'Neill

Want weight loss success? Before you can succeed at weight loss, you have to know the main reason why people fail.

The main reason many people give up on losing weight is because they try quick fad diets instead of making real lifestyle changes. This actually backfires not only because they don't lose weight, but they damage their self-esteem in the process ("Why can't I lose weight? I must be a failure at dieting").

This ultimately leads them to stop trying - when the truth is that almost anybody can lose weight, regardless of past history with diets.

But here's the key: weight loss success is the result of long-lasting lifestyle changes in one's thinking, diet, and exercise - not a quick 2 week fad diet.

To help you kick-start your weight loss, here are some basic dos and don'ts of healthy eating, which will help you become your own weight loss success story.

DO: Focus on eating healthy foods instead of focusing on what you can't have ('junk foods'). It's a basic psychological principle that we are drawn to what we focus on.

Think about what you can incorporate into your diet to make it healthier. This gives you a more positive focus instead of that dreaded diet 'deprivation' mentality.

Food pyramids generally recommend incorporating a lot of fruits and vegetables into your daily diet. These can taste delicious and give you tons of energy after eating them.

Also, take some time and read about the benefits of healthy foods. This will help you to want to eat them and you'll also feel better about yourself when you eat them (because you know how much they're helping your body).

DO: Divide up your daily caloric intake into several small meals. Eating several small meals while you try to lose weight will help you feel satisfied rather than hungry. (Hunger is the enemy of all dieting plans!)

Fresh fruits and/or vegetables make great snacks. Other healthy snacks include whole grain pretzels, low-fat yogurt, peanut butter on whole grain crackers, low fat string cheese, whole grain cereal, and 100-calorie packs.

By doing this you also help to keep your blood sugar steady throughout the day and your insulin levels lower (insulin, among other things, signals your body to store fat).

DO: Exercise. Most weight loss success stories incorporate some sort of exercise into their daily or weekly routine.

Physical activity is good for your body and mind. Try to find exercise you enjoy rather than something you don't like - because if you don't enjoy it, you won't stick with it.

Take a daily walk with a friend. Run a mile each day. Take a bike ride. In general, you should combine strength training exercise with aerobic or heart-pumping exercise. Strength training can include lifting weights or doing some challenging stretches.

Exercise is also a great way to stretch your caloric budget every day as regular exercise helps to build and increase metabolism.

Physical activity won't undo the effects of a poor, high calorie diet. But it can give you that little edge, especially when you know you're going to be eating extra calories that day or for a special occasion.

DON'T: Don't cut "unhealthy" foods completely out of your diet. Cutting unhealthy foods, such as cookies, cake, brownies, and ice cream completely out of your diet will only leave you craving these foods.

In turn, it may lead to overeating these foods once you finally give in to temptation.

Instead, eat unhealthy food in moderation. If you are craving ice cream, for example, eat one 1/2 cup serving. If you are craving a chocolate chip cookie, eat a small to medium sized cookie.

Eating unhealthy food in moderation won't ruin your diet and can actually help you lose weight faster since you don't feel deprived.

DON'T: Don't avoid fat completely. Having fat in your daily diet is healthy.

In fact, according to the Mayo Clinic, fat helps your body in numerous ways including giving you energy, aiding in the production of hormones that help your body clot blood, constrict blood vessels, and regulate heart rate and blood pressure.

Fat also carries vitamins to the blood, helps protect your organs, maintains healthy skin and hair, and helps keep your body insulated. It is important however to know what fats are good and bad for you.

Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats are good for you. These fats can be found in canola oil, peanut oil, olive oil, fruits, corn oil, fish, nuts, and flaxseed. Cholesterol, saturated fat, and trans fats should be avoided whenever you can.

Foods that contain these types of fats include, but are not limited to, beef, pork, veal, dairy products that contain 2% or whole milk, butter, palm oil, and lard.

According to the American Heart Association, people should limit their daily fat intake to less than 25-30% of all calories consumed.

Additionally, the organization recommends individuals limit their cholesterol intake to 300mg. per day, trans fat intake to 1% of caloric intake, and saturated fat to less than 7% of caloric intake each day.

DON'T: Don't use food to cope with stressful or upsetting situations. This is a big one as many people ruin their diets because they can't stop stress eating.

Invest time into finding healthier ways to deal with uncomfortable feelings. Healthy ways to cope with feelings include writing in a journal, taking a walk, reading a book, talking with a friend, and listening to music.

So there you have some tips for jump-starting your weight loss success plan. Remember that true weight loss success stems from a lifestyle change so incorporate these changes at your own pace.

Do what you can and build new 'thin' habits into your life at a pace that feels comfortable for you. If you're committed and take the steps above, you're well on your way to losing weight and keeping it off for good.

Quick Weight Loss - Not All it's Cracked up to be?

Is Quick Weight Loss a good idea? It all depends what you consider 'quick'. Some people follow what used to be called 'crash' diets, eating next to nothing for a limited period of time in an attempt to lose weight as quickly as possible. This is seldom a good idea, for several reasons. First, super Quick Weight Loss necessitates following such a restrictive diet that the dieter is more than likely to feel deprived - indeed, he or she has an excellent reason for feeling this way!

A diet very low in calories is unlikely to provide adequate nutrition, so it leaves you feeling hungry, deprived and resentful. People have different reactions to this; some rebel, while others are convinced that they don't deserve to eat normally and that they'll never be able to, without gainin weight. In other words, crash diets set the stage for future eating disorders.

Also, very Quick Weight Loss seldom stays off. That's because most people's bodies tend to have two metabolism 'settings', probably left over from those of early humans. When food is plentiful, it is consumed as needed, and the excess is stored in the form of fat. But when food is scarce (like during a restrictive diet) your body is convinced that it's going through a 'famine' time, and metolism slows down to conserve energy.

If you're after Quick Weight Loss, that's the last thing that you want, of course. And after you start to eat normally again, your body might still think that it's in a famine and needs to hold on to every bit of energy it can. In fact, some chronic dieters succeed in permanently slowing down their metabolism to the point where they end up gaining more weight than they ever lost in the first place. That's because lost muscle weight can sometimes be replaced by an equal volume of fat.

The real key to Quick Weight Loss, therefore, is not cutting calories but increasing activity so that you burn more of them more quickly. Consider the fact that ballet dancers can lose up to five pounds in a single performance - now that's Quick Weight Loss! Of course, most of us will never be active enough to lose weight that quickly, but certainly a daily workout, long or short, can help get you on the road to Quick Weight Loss. An exercise program coupled with watching what you eat is absolutely optimal in allowing you to lose weight fast. Don't be tempted by gimmicks or pills, though; at best, they are likely to be waste of money, and at worst, they can be downright dangerous.

Metabolism and Weight Control

Middle Aged Metabolism and Weight Control

Copyright © 2008 At Peace With Food

As I was lying on the ground the other day, having slipped on the ice while walking our beloved pet, I was wondering yet again about this whole "new middle age" idea. I was lying there thinking "if I was in my 30's, would I really be thinking about calling my husband and asking him to pick me up, because my back hurt? Or would I simply get my 30+ year old body up and keep walking?"

What I finally did was pick up my 50+ year old body and kept walking, but it was at a much slower pace.

This whole idea of my 50's being more like being in my 30's intrigues me. In a number of ways, many of us 50-ish folks are healthier that than our parents were at our age. Our access to health care, for many of us, is much better, so medically we can take better care of ourselves. The concept of "personal trainer" was unheard of twenty-five years ago, as was the idea of belonging to a gym. Making time for a daily walk wasn't even on the agenda for many people.

We are lucky, though, because so many of us are able to include these benefits into our lives, allowing us to be a much healthier generation.

However, some things haven't changed. As we age, our metabolism still slows down, which is why we tend to gain weight as we age. Metabolism refers to the rate at which the body burns calories. There are many factors affecting what is called our "metabolic rate," including height (tall people burn more calories than short folks), fasting (that's why skipping meals is not a good way to lose weight-your metabolism slows down) and temperature. In colder temperatures, our bodies need to burn more calories to stay warm. I suppose one way to lose weight would be to run around naked in the cold. However, I'm not sure how long this "diet" would last before your neighbors call the police.

The point is that we cannot control many of the factors affecting our metabolic rate, including age (young, middle or old).

The light at the end of the tunnel, though, is activity. When you are active, you're body can build muscle. Muscle is referred to as a more metabolically active tissue because it takes more calories to maintain muscle than to maintain fat. Fat is a lazy tissue, and can get along without any help on our part. But muscle? There's a different story. Muscles use more calories to do their job, so the more muscles you build, the more calories your body uses. And that's why, as we age, we need to stay active. We need to build our muscles, and maintain them to keep weight off. Walking is one important activity I rely on to keep my metabolism up. Others enjoy lifting weights. As long as you have worked with an experienced trainer making sure you don't injure yourself, increased muscle mass is definitely a benefit of this activity. Activity keeps your metabolic rate high, increasing the calories you burn, and helping prevent that fat tissue from growing.

So whether you are lying on the ice wondering how to get up, or stuck in a couch wondering how to get out, think about staying active. It's the activity that will make moving around (and preventing weight gain) a lot easier-at any age.

Why You Need To Boost Metabolism For Better Weight Loss Result?

Weight loss occurs when the body can burn off more calories in a day than it consumes. This is affected by two factors: how much a person consumes in a day, and how active the metabolism is at breaking down and burning off calories.

For this reason, it is obvious how important it is to boost the metabolism and keep it running at a healthy, efficient level so that you can help your own body to burn off as many calories as possible and result in the highest maximum weight loss attainable in a healthy manner.

In order to better understand how this occurs, one must first understand how the metabolism works. The metabolism breaks down food and nutrients to be used by the body. When not eating, whether you are exercising, sleeping, or even being lazy, the metabolism is still working and burning off whatever is available, whether it be recently consumed food or stored fat, in order to keep the body running.

Quite obviously, a more active metabolism, spurned by exercise and healthy eating, will result in more fat being burned throughout the day in order to keep the body running smoothly which will result in healthy weight loss in the long run.

Many believe that herbs or fat loss pills are the key to burning fat, but this simply isnt the truth. In most cases, these alternatives will result in only minimal results and can be damaging to the body when abused. These methods are seen as easy-outs, but when burning fat is issue, there is no such thing as an easy-out.

Studies have proven that there is really only one way to lose weight in a healthy way, and that involves the lengthy experience of having to pay attention to your diet (try to consume fewer calories and eat foods that boost the metabolism), drink more water (water keeps the body healthy and clean and also helps to keep the metabolism working at a smooth rate), and exercise daily in order to both burn off calories that way and to keep the heart pumping, which will result in both a boosted metabolism and healthier blood levels.

These factors combine to clearly show why boosting the metabolism is such a proven weight loss method. Time and time again it has been shown that boosting metabolism, combined with a healthy diet, will result in weight loss simply due to the fact that the metabolism will constantly be working behind the scenes and will constantly be burning off excess fat in order to keep the body working smoothly. Therefore, boosting your metabolism will result in both a better looking as well as a healthier body.

Now the challenge is how to boost metabolism?

Nutrition is one of the key factors in maintaining a healthy metabolism rate, along with hydration and physical activity. Simply put, no matter how much exercising you do, if you arent eating right then you arent going to see results. At the same time, eating right doesnt just mean watching your calories.

Certain foods are known for keeping the metabolism working at a high level. Complex carbohydrates and fiber, for instance, which can be found in oatmeal, whole grain cereal, and milk every morning at breakfast, are known for keeping insulin levels low after eating.

Exercise plays a major role in boosting the metabolism and being able to burn of calories and undesired fat. There are quite a few suggestions for what exercises to focus on, how often to exercise, and when to exercise. In many cases, just doing anything is helpful but doing the right exercises will help to maximize a boosted metabolism.

Should you take diet supplements?

When dieting and eating the right metabolism boosting foods isnt doing the job fully, there are plenty of healthy metabolism boosting supplements that can be sought out. It is important to pay close attention when looking for supplements, however, as many common diet pills and miracle pills will simply never work.

Much of what is advertised is completely falsified and it is important not to buy into these quick fixes. Rather, it can be both very helpful and healthy to find certain supplements which will help to boost the metabolism and increase the amount of calories burned each day naturally.

There are few supplements seems to be effective in boosting metabolism; for example Xerisan ASA diet pill. According to some source Xerisan ASA is one of the most effective and natural metabolism boosting pills though it looks expensive.

My conclusion?

Do your homework before you decide to buy any pills.

1) Embarrassment - Admitting that you're trying to lose weight is an embarrassing thing for many people. They feel too ashamed to go to the gym or walk into a well-known weight loss clinics.

In our society, it seems like being heavy is a cardinal sin. If you're not stick thin, there's something wrong with you. Ridiculous. People who are overweight are not lazy nor do they lack self control - however the odds are stacked against them. Huge portion sizes, high stress lives, jobs where you sit for hours, and food advertising shoved in your face 24-7. It's a wonder everyone isn't overweight.

Being overweight is nothing to be ashamed over. However if you are embarrassed to lose weight in front of others, don't let that stop you from slimming down. Lots of people lose weight without joining a gym or seeing a weight loss counsellor. Many people do it in the comfort of their own homes. They either start a diet plan quietly on their own or order from a diet meal delivery service. Some even buy their own fitness equipment and work out behind closed doors.

Remember, there's nothing to be embarrassed about when you're losing weight. You should be commended for trying to change for the better. But if you do feel more comfortable keeping it under wraps, you should. You have lots of options that let you lose weight in the comfort of your own home. Just don't allow embarrassment to be a diet sabotage and stop you from reaching your goal.

2) Lack of Time - One of the best things I ever heard a nutritionist say is that losing weight takes extra time and energy. Seems simple, yet no one does it. Lack of time is probably the number one diet sabotage for most people. In order to lose weight, you should be prepared to set aside some of your time and energy (especially at the beginning) to focus on this goal.

Any life change requires extra energy and time. When we're making other life changes like moving or having a baby, we expect this and we cut back accordingly on other things to make room for this change to our lives.

However most people don't apply this to dieting. They think they should be able to lose weight on the side as they go about their busy lives. Then they beat themselves up when they don't get the results they want.

If you're serious about losing weight, be prepared to set aside some time and energy for this task - whether that's cancelling an appointment so you can exercise, or getting up a bit earlier so you can prepare a day of healthy meals. Whatever it is, you can reap amazing results when you set aside extra time and energy to achieve the body you want.

3) Wishing Vs Planning - This is a huge diet sabotager that no one talks about. Most of us who want to lose weight have spent a lot of time wishing we were thinner. We go about the day hoping that extra piece of cake won't show up on our hips or that the salad we ate for lunch will magically help us lose 5 pounds by Saturday.

While there's nothing wrong with wishing, there is a big difference in wishing vs planning. Wishing means you just hope you lose weight - you might even make some half-hearted efforts to cut back on portions or eat a salad or two.

Planning means you make a commitment. You decide that you're going to make a change in your eating habits in order to achieve your goal - no 'ifs', 'ands', or 'buts'. Committing to lose weight means taking action. Wishing means you do nothing but still hope it will happen 'someday'.

Losing weight is not rocket science and most people of average health can do it. However, like any goal, you have to commit to it and work every day to achieve it. This is one of the biggest obstacles to losing weight.

Most people don't realize that there's a difference between wishing and planning or committing. If you're truly committed you will take the necessary steps day by day to achieve your goal. You may not lose weight overnight but you will lose weight over the long term. And in the process, you will have built up valuable skills that you'll need to keep you slim once you do achieve your goal.

So there they are - the 3 most common diet sabotagers. Ask yourself if any of these obstacles are hindering you from losing weight. If they are, address them and move on. You can lose weight when you decide that nothing is going to stop you from living your dreams.

Lot Of People Diet To Lose Weight These Days

by: glenn@isnare.com

When we chose to change our eating habits, we usually diet to lose weight. Sometimes we may have health issues, such as high cholesterol, which is what leads us to eat healthier.

Often times we diet to lose weight because as we are overweight and realize that our eating habits may have gotten in this predicament to begin with.

It is possible to just exercise and lose weight, but sooner or later the person will not lose any more weight without changing eating habits as well. Most of the time it is the other way around; people diet, that is they count carbohydrates, fat grams, or calories, somehow limiting their food intake to reach weight loss goals.

Even though every source you read on diet to lose weight encourages combining the diet plan with exercise, not everyone does this right away. Of course, it is ideal to diet and exercise from the beginning of a diet plan, some people may feel overwhelmed by taking on too much change at once, if exercise has not been a part of their life.

There are quite a few online support sites to visit, that have a multitude of information for anyone looking to diet to lose weight. Some diets work better for some than others, for instance, the Atkins diet required quite a drastic cut in carbohydrates, which may not be an appropriate diet to lose weight for everyone.

The South Beach Diet is a popular diet to lose weight because it allows dieters to eat many of the foods they eat anyway and is not quite as restrictive as others. There are also weight loss systems such as Jenny Craig, the LA Weight Loss Center, or Curves for Women.

All of these programs are great and offer a good deal of support for anyone who wants to diet to lose weight. Exercise is encouraged, and for the Curves for Women plan, it is the central part of the program.

When you do decide to diet to lose weight, be sure you visit with your healthcare provider first before beginning your program, especially if you have quite a bit of weight to lose, or if you have health issues that may be of concern. Exercise should not be contraindicated for anyone and can be tailored for each individual dieters specific needs.

You diet to lose weight, but you must also incorporate exercise into your plan. You will gain greater health, and also be able to maintain your diet and fitness goals.

Fat Loss Revealed Part 2

By Yuri Elkaim

The secrets to achieving the lean athletic physique that you’ve always wanted are held by Canada’s top trainer, Yuri Elkaim. Most people waste a lot of time in the gym with no real direction or positive results. Fitness and wellness coaches, such as Yuri Elkaim know there is a better way.

Yuri is a former professional soccer, Certified Kinesiologist, Registered Holistic Nutritionist, the Head Strength & Conditioning Coach for the nationally ranked University of Toronto men’s soccer program, and considered by many as Canada’s top trainer and fitness expert. He’s created Fitter U™, the world’s only 12-week body shaping fitness program for iPod/MP3 players geared to helping people lose weight, burn fat, and improve their fitness level. In this article, Amy Coates, Total Wellness Consulting’s nutrition expert will be interviewing Yuri on various facets of weight loss.

…continued from Part 1.

AC: So for beginners, a good nutrition program is possibly the most powerful factor?

YE: Absolutely! Obviously a nutrition program is vital – you must create a caloric deficit through a combined exercise and nutrition approach. But, more so I like to focus on getting my clients to focus on eating healthier, higher quality foods. I like to preach the qualitative side of nutrition more so than the quantitative calorie counting side.

So the key for the fat loss programs I use is exactly that – how can we force the body to burn as many calories as possible, and continue to burn them between workouts. The idea is to demand as much work from the body as possible – and maintain that caloric burn for as long as possible.

Now the ONLY reason the body burns calories is because the muscle tissue is working. It doesn’t matter what activity you are involved in – aerobics or weight training – its muscular demand that determines caloric burn. So you have to begin with that in mind.

Let’s think about this:

You can run a mile in ten minutes.

You can swim a mile in twenty minutes.

After a year of swimming every day and not running – you can now swim a mile in 16 minutes.

Without running – how much has your running improved? Very little. Why? We only have ONE cardiovascular system – so why doesn’t improving your swimming (and cardio system) automatically improve your running?

Because the ONLY reason your cardio system was involved in the first place was because of demand from your muscular system. So you adapted to the SPECIFIC MUSCULAR demands of swimming which by default then involves the cardiovascular system – it’s not the other way around as most people think. The muscles don’t move because of cardiovascular demand – the cardio system is elevated because of muscular demand.

AC: What’s the takeaway message?

YE: Hopefully the readers can understand – that we need to program the body based on the movements it’s going to perform – not based on the cardiovascular system. That’s an upside down method.

AC: So what methods work for fat loss? What methods are ineffective or inefficient for fat loss?

YE: Circuit weight training and interval training always work. Steady state aerobic work never works long term in the real world. Now for those of you out there who will no doubt get caught up talking about health, cardiac heart disease, cholesterol etc - I'm not arguing with you. But we’re talking about fat loss here.

However - for fat loss, the research is unequivocal - high intensity work is superior.

I think the problem is this:

Aerobic training by nature is lower intensity. At some point you get so good at it that it just doesn't burn as many calories, and in effect, you are burning fewer calories than you used to for the same time investment. So what do you do? Go for longer and inevitably run into the same problem? Or increase the intensity? Increasing the intensity is the obvious answer.

AC: You have commented that aerobics were useless for fat loss. This caused a lot of controversy. What did you mean?

YE: I'm sure you'll agree Amy that it only seemed to cause controversy with people who don't do this for a living. Most of the good practitioners in this area didn't even blink. It's not controversial at all in terms of fat loss and I'm getting bored going over it.

I don't think anyone who has trained themselves or anyone else has ever seen low intensity cardio to be a very effective fat loss tool. The loss in lean mass that is typical in most weight loss programs needs to be offset - and steady state aerobic training (despite it's plentiful health benefits) only adds to that problem.

So let me expand on what I meant:

When I said "Aerobics are useless for fat loss" what I meant was "aerobics are useless for fat loss". Is that clearer?

Ok - to be less antagonistic, let's just say that aerobic training for fat loss is the most overrated and overemphasized method in use today. It's completely outdated as a fat loss modality. Here's something to remember – write it on your fridge it you have to: Lifting weights in the intensity zone of 8-12 reps coupled with short rest periods has been shown beneficial for releasing the androgenic hormone testosterone and growth hormone. These important hormones encourage development of lean muscle mass (metabolically active tissue). Fat, on the other hand is just along for the ride! Aerobic exercise has been linked with the release of the catabolic hormone cortisol, which is antagonistic to the development of lean muscle mass.

The efficiency argument is interesting. Does weight training build muscle? No. It breaks down muscle and the body ADAPTS by building more muscle. So in aerobic training - when we "encourage the use of fat" - do we force that same body to adapt by storing more fat? Interesting, most exercise and fitness experts all seem to think so. Think about it for a moment. Who is leaner and more defined…a 100m sprinter or marathon runner???

Seriously - there are thousands of overweight individuals each year who complete marathons. Now completing a marathon is damn impressive to me. However it shows that the aerobic fitness needed to complete a marathon doesn't have anything necessarily to do with creating a fat loss effect. So if you are capable of two to three hours of steady state running and still not be burning enough fat - we can either go to a higher intensity or you can try four hours of running. Any takers for the latter?

In terms of fat loss - calories burned are the most important factor. And aerobic training burns less calories than anaerobic training and weight training overall (besides doing very little to increase your metabolism -your body's calorie burning engine).

So if we accept that lean mass is a major factor in your fat burning engine - and aerobic training makes that engine smaller (i.e. less muscle) and more efficient at burning fat (remember more efficient means it burns LESS) - how can having a smaller more efficient fat burning machine burn more fat? It doesn't.

AC: So you are saying that cardio is the least important component?

YE: I don't think so necessarily. However, I do believe that a combination of properly structure strength training accompanied by high-intensity interval training is the MOST effective way to burn fat while promoting lean muscle mass. The results speak for themselves, time and time again!

Fat Loss Revealed Part 1

By Yuri Elkaim

The secrets to achieving the lean athletic physique that you've always wanted are held by Canada's top trainer, Yuri Elkaim. Most people waste a lot of time in the gym with no real direction or positive results. Fitness and wellness coaches, such as Yuri Elkaim know there is a better way.

Yuri is a former professional soccer, Certified Kinesiologist, Registered Holistic Nutritionist, the Head Strength & Conditioning Coach for the nationally ranked University of Toronto men's soccer program, and considered by many as Canada's top trainer and fitness expert. He's created Fitter U™, the world's only 12-week body shaping fitness program for iPod/MP3 players geared to helping people lose weight, burn fat, and improve their fitness level. In this article, Amy Coates, Total Wellness Consulting's nutrition expert will be interviewing Yuri on various facets of weight loss.

AC: Hi Yuri. What is your general approach to helping people lose fat?

YE: The basic concept for any fat loss program is to burn as many calories as possible and maintain or increase lean tissue (which is what burns the calories in the first place). Regardless of how many calories you burn in training - once you lose lean tissue (a typical problem) you burn less calories overall - so your focus has to be on burning calories while trying to offset that problem.

A study in the International Journal of Sport Nutrition (8(3): 213-222, 1998) showed that 5 days a week of 45 min aerobic training for 12 weeks had no effect on body composition over dieting alone. Obviously even at these high levels of activity there is still a problem.

AC: Where do you start working with an overweight person?

YE: With a full lifestyle and structural evaluation. Typically the overweight person has so little structural integrity that a resistance training program to target their weaknesses and imbalances is my first approach. I also spend a lot of time educating them on the importance of maintaining a positive and unwavering mindset. Finally, I spend a good deal of time looking at their food intake, analyzing the integrity of their digestive system and supportive endocrine glands, and teach them how to prepare healthy menu plans.

It's interesting that the typical program for an overweight person is usually 1000's of reps (i.e. aerobics) which will cause more problems. A superior system would be to target the muscular system and control set duration and rest periods in order to create the same metabolic and cardiovascular demand. My approach is mirrored in the workouts and structure of my Fitter U™ MP3 fitness program.

AC: What type of questions and lifestyle review do you do with overweight clients? Are there any common factors among overweight clients?

YE: Primarily I see people with a lack of knowledge, lack of motivation, and lack of commitment to sticking to a program. I would say that the majority of what I do lies in motivating my clients and helping them bring their true potential and hidden greatness to surface. Every single person has greatness just waiting to be unleashed and I think it's a necessary step in the process.

Common factors: structural weaknesses, flexibility issues (i.e. they would be unable to walk on a treadmill for 15 minutes continuously), lack of nutrition (funnily enough we see overweight, almost malnourished people all the time), lack of motivation, and need the accountability.

AC: What physical concerns do you have to be careful of when working with overweight clients and how do you take these into account?

YE: Typically the biggest physical concern is that they are overweight and unconditioned. That's a big enough problem right there.

But it's not just overweight clients - it's EVERYONE! Every client is different and presents different challenges.

Everyone should have a full evaluation performed by a qualified professional. Any serious health and medical issues should be cleared by a medical professional first.

Most trainers have a program in mind when someone walks in the gym. I have NO IDEA what I'm going to do until I see the client and evaluate them. If you're not assessing - you're just guessing!

Weight Loss Tips For New Mothers

By Shabi Guptha

For those new mothers who are looking to shed those post pregnancy pounds, you can rest assured that weight loss after baby is entirely possible. With a little judicious planning on your part you will find that you can manage to look after baby, your family and yourself at the same as you are losing weight, without a loss in the quality of your food.

In fact, one of the most important things that you need to look into when trying to achieve weight loss after baby is your own personal diet. Unlike the fad diets of today, the very last thing that you need to do is to concentrate on one type of food group to the exclusion of all else.

You have only just given birth, not to mention the fact that you might be breastfeeding. The very last thing that you want is to lack a nutritious diet. On the contrary, you will need to keep your weight loss after baby to be one that is healthy not to mention practical.

The first thing that you need to ask yourself therefore, is how much of your time you are willing to sacrifice in looking after you figure, as well as everything else that you do. When you have reasoned this out satisfactorily for yourself, it is then a matter of deciding on a proper weight loss course for yourself.

Remember that it needs to be healthy and practical, so you might want to take the time to think over what exactly you want from such a course of action. How fast do you want to lose weight, and how much weight do you want to lose? Are you willing to go the extra distance and maybe even - horror of horrors - exercise?

Weight loss after baby won't be easy, but it is doable with the right attitude and a positive outlook. When you have these two things, you will be all set to get your pre-pregnancy body back.

It will of course take time and it behooves your success of losing weight that you keep this in mind. This will make it easier for you to accept the gradual changes which are healthier for you than more rapid changes will be.

If you are looking to achieve a rapid weight loss after baby has passed the two to three month mark, thinking that it will be safer to do so then, not to mention easier, think again. Rapid weight loss at any time is not safe, unless you have thee right support structure to back you up. Stick with the slow and gradual weight loss and you will be the better for it.

Overweight And High Cholesterol

It's been well documented by now that being overweight can lead to a variety of health problems, both internal and muscular skeletal. When mention of weight problems is made, it's fairly rare that problems to the external body or the muscular skeletal region are mentioned, but carrying excess weight on the body frame can lead to any number of physical stress injuries. If anyone should doubt this claim, they can tie a weight around their waist and observe the outcome.

When considering internal bodily functions, one of the major risks in being overweight is the development of high cholesterol. The term high cholesterol is actually a bit vague since cholesterol is fairly wide ranging, and not all cholesterol is harmful. In truth, cholesterol is found in the cells of all tissue and cholesterol is required in the building and development of cells. Without cholesterol in some form, the human body wouldn't function or develop normally. When discussing cholesterol that adversely affects health, the term that's really being referred to is a form of cholesterol found in the blood stream.

Cholesterol is a main component of lipids, or fat, found within the blood. Though it's a rather complex medical explanation when considered in specifics, essentially the cholesterol that makes up the lipids in the blood is carried by proteins, one of which is referred to as low-density lipoproteins or LDL. LDL is often referred to as bad cholesterol because of an association with artery disease. The higher the levels of LDL, the higher the chances for circulatory problems including heart disease and stroke. High levels of LDL then is what's really meant by references to high cholesterol.

High LDL levels can be an inherited trait, but are just as likely if not more likely to be brought about by diet. People who eat foods heavy in saturated fats in particular are more inclined to have high LDL levels than people who consume only moderate or small amounts of saturated fats. While overweight isn't exclusively a result of a high fat diet, high fat diets will certainly put extra weight on the typical person's frame over time. And whether diet is the main culprit or not, people who are overweight generally have higher levels of LDL than non-overweight people.

The reason for concern about high levels of LDL is quite clear: high levels of LDL are strongly associated with heart disease. This is frequently why routine physical examinations include a blood exam that checks for LDL levels. Any person who is overweight and has high LDL levels will almost certainly be recommended to lose weight. The good news is that weight loss is correlated with lower LDL levels. It's one more way that losing weight improves one's health outlook.

Five Common Myths About Losing Weight Fast

By Dick Weiss

Fast weight loss is becoming very commonplace throughout the world. We are undergoing an obesity epidemic that is causing people to seek more an better ways to lose weight quickly and permanently. There are many myths associated with this desire for quick weight loss and we will discuss some here.

Myth 1: You can achieve permanent weight loss with fad diets.

Fact: This is another common myth among the weight loss crowd. Fad diets are generally not healthy for you. A proper diet supplies the body with all the calories, proteins and minerals it needs. Diets that cut out foods without regard for the needs of your body cannot be healthy for you. Fad diets usually fail to deliver on the promise of permanent weight loss because people will continue crave the forbidden foods and will always end up by cheating, breaking the rules and eventually ditching the diet.

The real key to making weight loss permanent is to increase your exercise and to avoid eating foods that make you fat without nourishing your body. Extensive studies confirm the importance of exercising and of a well-balanced diet.

Myth 2: A high protein/low carbohydrate diet is OK.

Fact: These diets secure most of the daily requirement of calories from high protein foods, such as meat, dairy products and eggs, with a very small portion taken from foods containing a lot of carbohydrates such as bread, pasta, potatoes and fruits. The biggest problem with these diets is that many common and popular foods are forbidden. As a result it is easy for the user to get bored or frustrated. Once boredom and frustration set in, quitting time is never far off. Another problem is the lack of nutrients that are usually brought in by foods with carbohydrates, while allowing the user to eat bacon and cheese can raise cholesterol levels.

High protein/low carbohydrate diets result in fast weight loss in some users, but its not only fat that goes away. You can also lose some of your lean muscle mass and a lot of water as the kidneys work harder to rid the body of excess waste from the metabolizing of the protein and fat.

This stress to your kidneys is not healthy at all. Over time it can lead to dehydration, headaches, feelings of nausea and dizziness. Before engaging in a long-term diet to lose weight fast on a high protein/low carbohydrate diet you should discuss it with your physician. And if you are really committed to dieting, try a balanced diet first, because it will help you lose weight without injuring your system.

Myth 3: You will lose weight faster and stay healthier by switching to vegetarian foods.

Fact: It is a hard pill to swallow, but no food plan will work for you unless you take charge of your eating habits and make sure that everything that goes past your lips is the right kind of food. You need to be absolutely sure that the vegetarian diet will give your body all the nutrients and calories it needs. Eating large quantities of foods that do nothing for you nutritionally may fill your stomach but can cause you a lot of trouble in the future.

Plants tend to have lower concentrations of nutrients than meat consequently you will have to eat more food to make up for this difference. A strictly vegetarian diet will not get you enough vitamin B12, vitamin D, iron, calcium and zinc. Your body derives these substances mostly from dairy products and eggs in a regular diet, but true vegetarians don't eat them. To keep you levels of these nutrients normal you have to rely on the few and uncommon vegetables that can provide these substances.

Myth 4: No-fat and low- fat foods are always the best choice.

Fact: Fruits are the only low fat foods that are also low in calories. Most of the low-fat or non-fat group are not a safe choice when you are dieting. Almost all of these products have added sugar, starch or flour to make them taste better. This means extra calories that do not belong into your diet. Make sure that you check the list of ingredients on packages whenever you decide to buy low-fat or no-fat foods.

Myth5: Dairy products can cause heart problems and will make you fat.

Fact: Modern medicine has declared that eating a lot of dairy products is a surefire path to high blood pressure and stroke, despite the fact that a large group of people from France refuses to die even though they consume large quantities of cheese and wine.

Dairy products provide a main source of calcium that keeps your bones strong and healthy. They are absolutely essential for children and should not be overlooked by adults. Dairy products also contain vitamin D, which is crucial to maintaining the normal levels of calcium and phosphorus in your bloodstream.

To avoid weight gain from dairy products choose low-fat or non-fat brands. They are becoming more and more popular with people losing weight. If you are lactose-intolerant, drink lactose free milk, soy milk or rice milk. It does not taste exactly the same as true milk, but it's still very nutritious.

The only dairy products you should worry about are butter and margarine. They do contain high levels of fat. If you can't survive without them, at least eat butter. Margarine is a highly processed fat that is not very good for you. Butter may be a bit fatter, but it definitely is the lesser of these two evils.

These five myths only scratch the surface of what is out there. Be sure to confirm the facts before starting on a quick weight loss program. It is always imperative to combine a good diet with sensible exercise. You can often accelerate your results by utilizing a good diet supplement.

Detoxify and Lose Weight

Copyright © 2008 Leo Galland and Jonathan Galland

Are Toxins Making You Sick and Overweight? It's not surprising that toxins are all around us-in the air, water and in many commercial products. You probably know that these toxins can make you sick. Dust, mold and chemicals can lead to asthma, allergies and other chronic conditions.

But did you know that these toxins can also cause you to gain extra weight and make losing it almost impossible?

Researchers at the University of Quebec have demonstrated a link between environmental pollution and a decrease in metabolism. In addition, toxins cause inflammation throughout the body that can lead to leptin resistance. Leptin is a naturally occurring hormone in the body that helps regulate body fat. When leptin stops functioning, leptin resistance occurs, leading to weight gain and retention of excess weight.

Detoxification is the way your body rids itself of toxins, a natural process that occurs 24 hours a day. You can support your body's ability to detoxify through positive lifestyle choices such as enhanced nutrition, limiting toxic exposures, and exercise and stress reduction. In our book The Fat Resistance Diet, we provide our basic approach in Chapter Nine: Detoxify--and Lose Weight.

Do you ever experience?

• Lack of concentration

• Irritability

• Mood swings

• Foggy headedness

• Inability to lose weight

Exposure to toxins at home, the office, and school or in a store can trigger these problems. Everyday items such as paint, printers, magic markers, and copiers can produce the problems listed above.

Simple Steps to Reduce Exposure to Common Toxins

1) Paint. For your home or office, look for low VOC paint which is less toxic.

2) Laser Printers and Copy Machines. Use a DeskJet printer or copier instead.

3) Household Cleaning Products: Use all natural and non-toxic cleaning products. We use baking soda and water for most cleaning, and vinegar diluted with water for windows.

4) New Clothing and Laundry. Wash new clothes well before wearing to soak out some of the formaldehyde used to stiffen new fabric. Avoid heavily scented laundry detergent and fabric softener; these increase your exposure to chemicals.

5) Stale Indoor Air. Indoor air pollution is recognized as a common problem. With airtight buildings and homes, toxins can build up. Get outside for some fresh air during lunchtime.

6) Tobacco Smoke. Do not smoke and make your home, car and office a smoke-free zone.

Detoxify with More Nutrition-Not Less

When we talk about detoxification we do not mean fasting, purging or other procedures, and do not recommend these. Fasting can be dangerous and undermines the body's ability to detoxify naturally by depriving the body of adequate nutrition.

The point of detoxification is to help your body process toxins by giving it more nutrition. The liver is the major organ for detoxification. For the liver to function well in its job of detoxification, it requires nutrition: adequate protein is essential to this effort, and many vegetables and herbs can help.

Foods to Help Detoxify

There are special foods you can eat that help the liver function well to process toxins, such as these listed below.

Cruciferous Vegetables: - Broccoli - Cabbage - Cauliflower

Sea Vegetables: - Hijiki - Dulse - Wakame (which are from Japanese cuisine)

Dark Greens: - Kale - Collard Greens - Swiss Chard
